For those of you who want to step up to a higher quality stepper motor controller, the Gecko G540's are now on sale for $255. These controllers go on sale for a short time about once a year. Last year they were on sale for $199, but still it is better than paying full price if you are thinking of upgrading your machines any time soon.

I can vouch for their quality as I have been using one for about a year now. No missed steps, no fumbling with current adjustments, and no overheating of your controller and stepper motors if you accidentally leave the machine unattended.

Will these work with the CNC-Planet USB boards?

Yes they will, but you may need a different adapter cable. You might want to check with Andrej at Planet-CNC to see if he has made up an adaptor for it yet, or contact johnbernard36 here on the forum.

John designed a DIY version of the board with a parallel port cable connector built into it. With it, you can unplug the cable from your parallel port running Mach 3 and switch to the Planet CNC board without any problem. I don't know if he has any plans to make them available to others, but you can ask.

John and I both have Gecko controllers in our machines. They cost quite a bit more, but they are trouble free and worth the investment if you plan on using your machine every day.

If you are just going to use your machine once a week, it is probably not worth putting the extra bucks into it, but now is the time to buy it because they only go on sale for a short time and then its back to $299 if you want one later on.
