Excellent use of hybrid building materials. The wing is just supurb! Very nice work indeed.

The retracts are installed and functional. I need to find a controller to slow down the speed a little... Mudman1959

Wow these things are quick! I wonder if there is a setting in the computer radio to slow down the speed of movements?
    Looks great mudman

Got the Landing gear retracts and the gear bays more less finished. I need to purchase some diamond treaded wheels and then finish the gear doors. A little detail painting on the Robart plastic gear covers should make them look more realistic... Mudman1959

    Update 01/19/11
Had a chance today to sit and work on the bottom of the wing... It's all sheeted in and the gear are installed and working. Added Robart strut covers and scale diamond treaded tires... Mudman1959 Attached files [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I was just cutting out the fuselage parts and found 2 issues. On the cut file for sheet 1, the horizontal stabilizer is not tabbed and there is a missing part that didn't make it on to either sheet. I will fix them and get the new codes posted tomorrow. I will add the dihedral spar piece when I update the files.

Well here it is... The first cut of the fuselage parts. Now the fun really starts to see if I can put the puzzle together and make a flying airplane out of them. I am sure there will be some changes added to the design as I continue with the build... Stay tuned! Mudman1959

I didn't really get the feeling for the size of this plane until I got the fuselage temporary framed up and sitting on the wing... and I like it! This is going to be the biggest one I have built to date. Going to sheet the tail surfaces in 1/16 balsa for a little more strength and rigidity. I like the mods Navionflyer did to the fuselage framing, it should be really strong... Mudman1959 Attached files [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Looking very nice.... Is that carbon fiber I see in the tail, or just marker marks?

rcav8r.... It is carbon fiber rods for more strength and rigidity. Both the elevator and the rudder will also have them installed and the sheeted with 1/16 balsa. This has turned into a big project! I just hope it flies as good as it is starting to look... Mudman1959

That's good as I certainly could see flutter being a problem without them.

Started today gluing up the fuselage and adding some extra ribs down the side of the fuselage. So far it looks like it will be a very sturdy fuselage... Mudman1959

I re-thought the placement of the ESC... Originally I was going to mount it on the top of the nose structure but the started thinking about cooling. I was planning on making the nose scoop functional to duct cooling air into the battery area so why not put the ESC inside the duct. I mounted the ESC "No Spark" safety plug harness and also started working the motor mount as you can see by the most recent photos... Mudman1959

Started the buildup of the nacelle... Looks terrible right now but you can see the general shape starting to emerge. It's going to take a lot of filler and sanding to smooth this one out. The nacelle is just layers of blue core foam laminated together... 18 layers of it, and roughly carved and sanded into shape. Might have been easier using a 2" block of Blue foam but you use what you have available. It will still work... Mudman1959

Actually looks quite good. I found the super light weight Spackle (the stuff in the tub that feels empty even though it is full) sticks rather tenaciously to the foam, and hides a multitude of sins. I was worried it wouldn't stick, but it sure does. I don't know/forget what your going to cover this with, but when I built my 8'' C123 out of pink foam, I had a lot of places I need to fill. I filled with the above mentioned filler, coated with water based poly-U, sanded with something like 320, and then glassed with .5 ounce cloth, and then put a few top coats of the WBPU. Can't even tell where the seams are if you are trying.

It will be covered with the Dollar tree foam board with the paper removed. I am also thinking about Styro Spray 1000 from Industrial Polymers in Texas... http://www.industrialpolymers.com/produ ... tyrospray/
I have read several reviews from other builders and they give this a good score with minimal weight added. Looks like it might fit the bill and once applied and dried it can be painted with any paint. As for the Super light weight Spackle, I need to purchase a new tub since the one I have dried up... I must have not got the top on good the last time I used it. I just hope this plane will fly! Otherwise it's going to be a expensive Static display model... Mudman1959
