Smart Bird by Festo

    Can someone figure out the mechanics of this? I'd love to try to build one in foam.

    Cool stuff!
    It looks like the tips are free hinged.
    The way the wings are able to flex so easily reminds me more of a real bird.

    There is a 17 minute "making of" video on youtube
    Festo SmartBird - Bird flight deciphered -

    in which they present the history of the project and show the internals. Very light weight stuff. It looks complex but possible to recreate, but as with many things I fear the devil is in the details, i.e. getting just the right balance between power, speed, wing torque etc... . Very impressive project with amazing results hopefully they will continue to refine the deign

    I highly recommend watching the video even if you're not interested in recreating the bird as it is very interesting from a purely technical perspective in what they did and how. There is also a PDF at the Festo site that provides more details (motor, weight, radios etc...) just google smartbird.
