I had some free time on my hands and motivated by the Summer Olympics 2012, I got the idea in my head to make some Olympic Medallions for presentation at our next club meeting.

I used Sketchup to draw the basic medallion and converted it to an STL file which I opened in Meshcam and created the gcode for cutting.

Then I searched the web for a picture of a plane to go on the medallion and converted it to greyscale. Meshcam created the gcode for the airplane which I cutout and glued to the medallions.

I am going to apply Minwax Polycrylic to the medallions and then paint them Gold, Silver, and Bronze; add Blue Ribbons to complete the project.

The cut files use a 1/16" bit and are designed for the overhead gantry Phlatprinter III.

Medallions are made from Blue Fan Fold Foam. I remove the membrane from the FFF before cutting.

    [Edited] Polycrylic is a Minwax product, not Krylon... Attached files BronzeMedalWithRibbonSupport.cnc (223.7 KB)Â GoldMedalWithRibbonSupport.cnc (294.3 KB)Â GoldSilverBronzeMedals.skp (1.6 MB)Â [IMG] SilverMedalWithRibbonSupport.cnc (306.3 KB)Â aircraft_insert.cnc (2.7 MB)Â

I am trying some new stuff out to see how well it will work. Medallion on the left is coated in a high gloss two part mix like epoxy. Cure time however must be overnight, cause it hasn't setup after a couple hours.

I finished painting the gold medal on the right with an auto paint that would normally dissolve the foam, but the Minwax polycrylic protected it.

I have to buy some silver, bronze paint to finish the other two medals. If the pour on stuff sets up hard on my test piece, I will use it on all of them and post pics when they are all finished. Attached files [IMG]

And my neighbor saw the medals and wanted me to cut out some letters for a tin wall piece she had purchased so that it reads "Gerry's Kitchen". It was a bit tricky, but I did it much like the medals and then cut out the individual letters and glued them to the wall art.

The medals turned out great!
I did a kitchen sign for my sisters house cut from black 6mm depron. It turned out better then expected. Not a 3D carving just the cut outs, she really likes it :)
