    I awoke with a jolt about 2am with the same thought. I'll use 1/4'' 5 ply. I've also thinking of making a quick change table hanger. Attached files [​IMG]

    That would work for sure. I still would like to have the tables on there, and this wouldn't allow it.
    A quick change table hanger would be good. Mark was asking for ideas about that for the new MK2.

    ok fellas, back to my list of mods, lols....the ups truck just got here about 15mins ago...got my didikey chips. i bought the hightemp version of the stock chip...they work great, used 5 min thermal epoxy to affix the chip to my new jumbo heatsinks....now i have to cut a new control box cover...have to make it about a inch taller. this time i can do a better job. they should run ice cold now.....maybe i should of just did a watercooling mod like my pc, lols.... air should do the trick....randy.
    thermal epoxy, they also make a better silver version, but the pc store was outta stock....this will work great...

    fellas, made my first cut using the spring mod. gotta tell you if you dont do any other mod to your phlatprinter...ya gott do this one. its just awesome!! oh so lovely.....

    Y'know, those wheels look like the ones on the bottom of a sliding screen door to me, and the ones at "the man's store" (hardware store) already have bearings in them. Less friction is a good thing! :)

    ther ya go dennis.....the only trickey about the mod will keeping the rollers as close to the top as possible. sounds like ya your all set. just got my machine back running yesterday...gotta remake my cooling cover, the sinks are alot taller, lols. if ya go with the door rollers, keep me updated on how ther work. i am all ears, lols. randy.

    finally got the front table support and the control cover cut. as mentioned before, i had to remake the cooler to allow for the heatsink chip cooling mod. also got the phaltty tore down agian. in the process of redoing the y-axis......i am doing a "enhancement". lols.... more to follow. randy.

    I have been raving about the bits that you sent me I hope you have heard. They are great! They were the first ones tried in the MKII and they work GREAT!
    Thank you soooo much for sending them. I am looking forward to trying out the 1/16" bit you guys are working on as well.

    You trying 4 start acme??
    I noticed they had 1/4-16 4start nuts, and thought that might be the route your taking.
    Curious to see what you come up with :D

    shawn, i was gonna wait on the belt mod, but i decited to stay with the acme lead screw. i like the dumpster stuff so much, man i cant buy anything else now.....this dude makes some fine lookin and peforming components. i will be installing a 3/8-8 4 start acme, with his anti-backlash nut and coupler. the screw i got at mc master for 39 bucks. also im modding the gantry to be able to withstand the rapids he says it will acheve. before when my chip blew, i thought it was the stepper, so i bought a 280in. oz. motor, tim says this will fit the bill and be the set-up. :D :D this fella seems as to really know his business, go on you tube and search "dumpster cnc". ......check out the machines this guy has built. randy.

    thanks shawn, also i am working on a dremel nose mount. im really not sure as to stay with the dremel thou...i was browsing that cnc site for some ideas. they got whats called a proxxon, the fellas say its way better than the dremel. now that i got my machine tore down agian, lmao, it may be a lil bit to get running agian. i want to get the dremel or whatever i decide to use mounted good. i also seen eric's belt conversion, look like he did a great job on that. randy.

    Randy, It would be cool to see a proxxon nose-mounted in your PhaltPrinter to see what benefits there are to using it over the dremel. I have also heard good things about Proxxons, that they are quieter and have higher torque at low speed settings. I would think that a nose mounted rotary tool in conjunction with your upgraded rods and bushings would result in some pretty good wood cutting since the whole setup would be so rigid. Heck if you keep going with your mods you'll probably be cutting aluminum on your PhlatPrinter soon! :)

    mastertech, thanks for the nice comments....i looked at the proxxon tools, but decited to stay with a dremel. i have a dremel multi-pro tool im gonna slap in....its way, way, better than the junky model 200 i bought for it. also the dremel will get ya around 35,000rpm. the proxxon is only 20k..wile i tore down for my new acme screw thread, i wanted to upgrade the dremel mount also wile its ripped down. i got a kick butt nose mount along with mark's stock mount. made it outta a chunk of delrin i had layin around. i will post photos of it when its completed. i allways post the nice photos of the printer, and figure i would post one wile i work on it, lols. also the new acme is a 3/8-8 four start. should give the speed i want with accuracy. the fella at dumpster cnc says it will do around 400ipm. that will be fine for me. randy.

    First I want to say that you have a truly great looking Phlatprinter. The first thing I check out when I read the forums here is always your thread.

    The statement I quoted above made me think and break out my calculator, because it seemed a bit too good. I have been looking to increase the speed of my phlatty by changing to ACME-thread, but after some calculation I think the belt conversion is the way to go. The reason is that to achieve 400ipm your stepper must get up to 3200rmp and that's alot for a stepper. Have you seen a torque curve for a stepper motor? (example here: http://www.velmex.com/motor_torque.html#6) They have max torque at slow speeds and then it quickly goes down. All of the steppers on that page run out of juice at about 5000-6000steps/sec which is about 1500-1800rmp, so that's why I think 400ipm, with 3200rmp on the stepper, is quite optimistic.

    On the ACME thread you get 1/8" of Y-travel for each revolution of the stepper, but on a belt drive with a pulley that has, for example, 1/2" pitch diameter you get 1.57" of Y-travel per revolution. So for 400ipm with the belt drive in this example the stepper only has to get up to 254rmp and that keeps the stepper in it's sweet high torque zone. However, the speed comes at a price of lower resolution. With the ACME thread you get 0.000625" of Y-travel per step and with the belt drive the step length is 0.00785" More than ten times worse resolution.

    Well, I don't want to critisise (spelling?) your design (because it is marvelous), I just want to clear out some possible missunderstanding about achievable speed with direct drive ACME thread (or allthread for that matter). To solve this you can always make a belt drive for the ACME rod. But even if you gear the belt driven ACME rod to the same Y-travel as the pure belt drive, there will always be more friction on the ACME rod system (the rod friction against the drive nut) so for speed, the belt drive is the way to go.
