WELCOME TO THE BUILD A BETTER MOUSE TRAP CONTEST

Tune in now and watch LIVE to see which mouse trap design catches a mouse

    [ustream]536994[/ustream]

    Here is a direct link
    http://www.ustream.tv/channel/phlatprinter-mouse-trap-contest

Here's how it works...You submit an original humane mouse trap design to us including the SketchUp file and Phlat Code text file. We'll cut it out on our Phlatprinter and build it. All entries will be placed in the kitchen (where the mouse lives) at 7:00 pm on March 8. We'll place names on the mouse traps and set up a ustream live video feed of the mouse traps. We may occasionally use the web cam for other purposes (live stream of the MKII) but will focus it on the mousetraps whenever possible (at night mainly when mice are most active). We will check the mouse traps every morning. If you guys are up and see a mouse go into one of the traps, please let us know so we can remove him from the premises :) We're really excited about this contest and look forward to seeing your great designs. Be creative. Be inventive. Most of all, have fun!

ELIGIBILITY: All Phlatboyz and like-minded individuals. You do not have to be a Phlatprinter owner to enter this contest. Just download SketchUp and install the PhlatScripT plug in and go at it.

    Rules:
All entries must be received by Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. EST. All entries must be emailed to support@phlatforum.com and include the Sketchup file, Phlat Code text file, and any special instructions you may have for building it. Phlat Code should be generated using the PhlatScripT. We will cut it out on the Phlatprinter using 1/4" fan fold foam with an 1/8" bit. We are not responsible if an entry is not received or if we build the mouse trap incorrectly. We are not responsible for misalignment's. When possible, please use the tab and slot construction for ease of build. We will be using hot glue to build the mouse traps. If you notice the mouse trap is built different than you would have intended, please contact us immediately. We will use peanut butter for bait on all mouse traps. The mouse trap must be humane and the mouse cannot be harmed in any way as a result of the submitted mouse trap. If the mouse escapes from the trap because of design flaws, the contest will resume. If a mouse is able to chew its way through and escape, that mouse is considered caught. The entire mouse trap must be made of foam.

Only one prize will be issued. The mouse trap that catches the first mouse wins. If two or more mice are caught in one 24 hour period, the winner's name will be drawn randomly from a Phlatboyz hat. We reserve the right to cancel this contest at any time for any reason. Delivery of this prize is undetermined and not guaranteed by any certain date. We will notify the winner through the email address that was used to submit the entry. Only one entry per person.
We reserve the right to update these rules at any time during the contest. All posts made by kram242 or theothers in the Mouse Trap Contest thread will be consider part of the rules (in case we didn't think of something :)
If a mouse has not been caught by Sunday, March 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. EST the contest will end. The winner's name will then be drawn randomly from a Phlatboyz hat based on the names of all entries received.

    PRIZE:
"font-size: 1120px;">One Phlatprinter MKII Phlat-Bonez Kit! Shipping charges are not included.
JUDGES: Mark and Trish Carew and the mouse.

DIRECT QUESTIONS TO: Please post on this thread any questions.

No purchase necessary to win. Void where prohibited. By entering this contest, you have agreed to all of the rules listed above and that your design is public and can be shared on the Phlatforum for anyone to download and build to catch their own mice. Phlatboyz, LLC is not responsible for any injuries that may occur as a result of this contest (especially to the mouse :))

So cool! I can not wait, I'll be designing a trap tonight in my geography class. It is an easy class and Ben Stein teaches it so I'll have plenty of time lol. Good luck and I can not wait to see what everyone comes up with!

    Well this is neat!
How big are your mice? When I lived in town they were maybe 2'' long w/o tail. On the farm they were about 4''+. Could make a difference on trigger design specs :D

is a good way to level the field. Our only power is elasticity and gravity. Then again getting a mouse to close and lock the door after entering would be cool too.

    Great Crash

Cool guys. We're looking forward to your designs and getting rid of the mouse!! Please help! I want my kitchen back.

By the way, I think we could extend the deadline slightly to Sunday, March 8 at 7:00 AM EST from the listed Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 PM EST. We wanted to make sure we have enough time to build them all but also want to make sure you all have enough time to design it. So, this should give everyone one good day of the weekend to work on them.

    Hope this helps.

    Mark and Trish

Mike I laughed so hard when I saw that pic! that is our mouse I just know it! I mean how else is he able to get all the bait from the trap without ever setting it off?

Building it with foam only is one of the things that will make it really interesting :)
I think you could find a way to cut foam maybe in a zigzag to create a simple rubber band effect.
BTW E-T cool video you have there on the pizza flyer with the on board cam on your video page, nice editing work and I hope I can get out and see you guys Thursday.

66tbird we have the smaller variety

We are looking forward to all your great ideas guys. Its going to be a lot of fun and we may just catch this sucker! :D
I have some ideas of my own but I am not eligible to enter

This is a great idea for a contest! Foam only, hmmm, guess that rules out my chainsaw trap. :D

    No, wait I'm serious...

A suggestion: Bait the traps with only a tiny amount of peanut butter. Otherwise that sneaky little bugger might get so full from all the failed designs, he'll just waddle off and sleep for a couple days.  ;)

Good point Dennis! another thing we have to consider is how to set the traps up
We will iron this out when we see how they all look when they are built :D

Alright don't kill me but is the safe area of FFF 42w X 22h? I wish I had a source for the blue stuff I could save a lot of money in the testing phase of my designs.

AnyAirRc, There was a thread here or over on RCG that talked about a manager at a Lowe's in Tennessee (iirc) that would ship the blue stuff to a Lowe's near you as a special order, if yours did not carry it regularly. No time to look myself, but it's there. Or was it on WattFlyer?

I've stuck with the 'only foam and glue' method and of the two built so far one needed no glue. But it is much nicer to glue it together. If Mark wants tape for structural convenience that's cool with me.

The old phart that put mine together was so impressed at how it worked he had me cut two for him. Few hours later I get a call that they worked. So I now know it works on a 7 gram mouse.

I'm holding off on the submission to further refine the unit and documentation. Ahhh, just like old times but without the headache.

We would like to say that the use of tape (minimal) is OK to include in your design. We will be using either a normal Scotch like tape or packing tape. Please include only these two types of tape as we have them readily available.

Thanks again. One mousetrap design with one trapped mouse...this is getting good!!!

Well, I hate to rain on anyones parade...
But I know for a fact that the house mice of the variety that made their way into my house a while back can eat right through... you guessed it... foam :!:

And that was the 2 inch stuff.

There is always the chance that Mark's mice are not so bright, but it's something to consider. :?

    EDIT:
OOPS I see tbird has already started catching mice... I musta had super mice! Lol they wanted my pp!
