I've been wanting to build a fast hotliner type plane to enter the fastest foamy challenge in RCgroups, and finally came up with something. I hope to maiden her today or tomorrow. I plan to start somewhat slow to make sure she flies, then keep trying different power setups to find out how fast I can get her up to. Right now there insn't much room to get any bigger batteries in, so I might scale it up a bit more. I didn't worry about the paint job, I just want to see it . After I make sure she's flight worthy I will post plans.

Maybe for sport flying IMO, but for 'go fast bank'n and yank'n above 60 mph your golden and yaw tendencies can be trimmed out via aileron differential. Hard part on tiny racers is the launch, or is it the fun part

It's the high aspect wing that makes me ask, Is it glassed? Funny thing happen with 7:1+ ratios above about 75 mph in high G's.

The fastest foamy challenge doesn't allow fiberglassing, but they do allow packing tape. So guess what, the whole thing is taped with packing tape . It is surprisingly stiff!

 

I remember that fastest foamy challenge thread. I wanted to do a design myself. But then it hit me again I don't have a place big enough to land it. So I'm stuck with 3D and flapped gliders. Plus I think my neighbors wouldn't appreciate prototype testing and destruction from above.

Well, I was able to maiden my Speedy today.
For some reason I put the CG way too far back...What was I thinking...It's not a 3D foamy .
Too bad my camera man wasn't able to get the chicken dance in the sky on film. Despite it not being controlable, I managed to keep it out of the pits. I put her straight nose in the ground. Fortunately it was the tall grass.
I was really surprised how little damage there was. The firewall and a couple of other spots had to be reglued, but the packing tape and design structure made her pretty strong.
So after I patched her all up we went for #2. This time the CG was spot on. This plane flies fast!

All I have in her right now is a Mystery 3000 kv motor off Ebay, a Zippy 20C 1300mah 3s lipo, and a cheap 30 amp esc.

I could tell when you gave it the watts, she'd yaw left. I've have plenty of speed ships that did that. If you right thrust it out you lose the really top unloaded speeds. I normal just put it on right edge and let the torque do the climb-out letting the plane build speed in a hurry. ''Then freaking out the other racers by having to do a half roll before pulling turn one ''

My camera man was trying a different program than he was use to and thinks it was around 95mph, but the guys in rcgroups will hopefully check on it soon. I will post results when I find out.

 

I gave it a shot on the doppler Program I have. I'm no expert at this but, here is what got.

Don't quote me on these numbers the guys on the RCG's Thread are much better at this.
The plane looks great and thats some speed you got there @ 114.4.
As for the camera man. He should not follow the plane. For best results I would face the camera to show that your not comming out of a dive and let the plane fly over with out moving the camera. Flying as close as possable also.

Today I attempted to go faster. I put 2 2s lipos to make a 4s lipo in there (didn't fit well) but it fit. I found I needed to get the cg forward but couldn't move anything to do that. I taped $.50 to the nose and it balanced fine(I hate adding weight). I flew slow a little to trim things out, made a high speed pass went to turn and the plane went all funky on me (did the same thing as if it was tail heavy). It was uncontrollable, so it crashed. Come to find out one of the quarters flew off and made it tail heavy . Good news is it was quite a bit faster and now I have a reason to scale her up a little to make more room for the electronics. Ok it's oficial.
The Don on Rcgroups shows it at 91.4mph.
I think thats pretty good for a $33 power setup

 

I attempted to go 4s yesterday with my rebuilt Speedy.
Hope you guys get a kick out of the video.
V3 is gonna be a bit stronger LOL.

You can do it. If your next version has a stronger build with 4s I think you can do it.

Mmmm, that's fast. I love it. It's the kind of fast where the plane just seems to skip across the sky, your mind is way ahead of the plane, and the stick movement is oh, so small.

I used to do the same kind of limit testing with the nitro stuff. 40 inch span was about the only rule per say simply for visual reasons. We didn't have Doppler so we timed the shadow across a 100 yards. Three timers, ten passes, bell curved the results, tossed the highs and lows then averaged the rest. .86 seconds was my average. I was the only one still doing it when the FAI came into town so I tried for a closed course record, but my total flying area was 7cm-sqr to small I've got a pic somewhere.
