DO you mean the Pens thing, or the Linux thing?
Anyway the download kept timing out last night. It would start, then about 15 minutes in, it would time out. I would restart, and the process would repeat. I tried a random large download from another site, and it was lightning quick. So then I tried the mirror for EMC. It was really slow, but appeared to go OK...that is until I checked it this AM, and it too failed.

Since I'll be starting over tonight, what build would you recommend? The 6.06 or 8.04
    Thanks
    Dave

    Both!
I'm running 8.04 w/ ECM and that should run better / be more compatible but who knows. I assume they have the 6.06 version for those who try to upgrade only to find it fails for what ever reason. I actually installed ubuntu first then downloaded the package for ECM. But have another P C over here (read relic) that I want to try and get it to run on, if the 8.04 wont go on that I'm gonna try 6.06 I'll let you know how it goes if I can get it to DL...

Based on similar designs, I'm prototyping a simple floating nut made from two washers sandwiched around a lifesaver shaped Cutting board disc with a 1/4-20 tapped disc "floating" within. I'm going to bolt this to a demo gantry to see if it works before modding the real one. I'll add some sort of thin spacer to free up the drive nut so it will rotate freely within the confines of the inner "lifesaver" hole. Hopefully the pic tells the story better. ' edit - I'll need to make the drive nut and guide hole oblong to keep everything from spinning around aimlessly.. Attached files [IMG]

Eflybob, Man if you can get that to work it will be great! I really think it would solve any binding problems.
What a great mod to take on, can't wait to see the results.
Thanks for sharing and taking this one on.

Eflybob, you'll probably want to make the nylon nut thicker so you can tighten the screws on the outer washers and lock it in place. If the inner nut can rotate to either direction, at all, there will be some lost axis motion as the shaft rotates, until the nut stops against something the other direction and starts driving the gantry. :(

I was also thinking if there was too much "play" up/down and left/right then the rod would really wobble and may cause problems. That's what we were thinking when the guys at work and I were trying to come up with something. Only one way to find out though, huh :D Heck I just want to cut some foam with mine first.

Also on the Linux front, I think the CD ROM in the PhlatPC is bad. I slapped it together from some parts that were being tossed at work. It sticks on the Ubuntu splash screen. Now I remember that I had problems when Loading XP on the P.C..... I think I'll stop in work on Friday and fish around for another drive.

Some friction will exist between the washers and the nut that should limit the wobbling., I'm going to try a pair of sliding rectangles one inside of the other as in the pic... Slightly more complicated to cut, but way less play than an oval. If I can get this right in Sketchup, I'll try a slowwww multipass cut with my Phlatprinter. As Far as Linux, I had to burn the CD Image three times before I got a successful Install. EMC2 is great! Thanks to others on this site for the guides...
