    Randy,
Did your 48 inch eagle just use the V Tail for control or did it also have ailerons?

Good. That is what I thought. I have your CNC files 1,2, and 3 and wondered if they cut for ailerons. I have an SKP file called "Southern Eagle" that is the same design but it shows a routing line, sorry I don't know the correct terminology, for the 45 degree cut in the wing for ailerons. It also shows a shallow cut to enable the upcurved tips for the wing. I like your method better as it produced a nice smooth curve. Much more realistic.

I am asking about the files because I know someone that has a Phlatprinter in another part of Florida. He has cut files for me before but I always was able to look at them in Sketchup before hand to verify them. Since you created the files I am sure they are fine. I am guessing that the three files are something like, 1. wing parts, 2. fuselage parts, and 3 ????

Hey, I got a strange idea Randy, might be worth entertaining...
I'm not sure how you would mix it with the v-tail at this point, but what if you did cut in ailerons? Instead of tipping up the wings, and worrying about getting them equal and all that, why not clip the tips and make them adjustable and servo controlled?

Maybe get rid of the v-tail and only use the tail for pitch control? This would solve the question of what amount of reflex to build in, as it would be adjustable via the control surface setup.

______^______/ Where the slashes are adjustable, and you would not need all the amount of difference to give you a lift differential…

yea Erik, i have thought about the aileron thing. i almost did my lil eagle that way. also i think it flies fine without them on this type of model. this big eagle is way more work, and materials and i hate to experiment know. i did do the airfoil more controlled and that's all i did except scale it up. i can always add the ailerons later if i feel the need for them. that's the approach i took on the first one, and as you know ya could take a nap, wake up then land in a half hour, lols. i still think you will get a new record with it....with my old eyes, man i donno, lols. randy.

made the top skin outta 6mm today...got to say its overkill. the panel weighs 3.5 oz. the total weight without glue is 22.5oz. way to fat, and its just to robust and don't look like its needed...ordered a 10 pack of 3mm from the foam factory, and will resume the top skin when i receive. i cut out the tail and am working on the join angle....will post update when glued up. randy.

Randy I weighed my 109 today for ya, and you know the light wing loading feel it has, came in a hefty 44.87 Oz (1272 grams)! New weight record!

thanks Erik...we should be good then. that 109 flew very nice and floaty. I'm gonna guess at the bird auw as being 30oz. max. we will see as i go. made a tail setting glue fixture to maintain tail angle. randy.

cut a new glueing fixture for the tail. its real hard to get rite without it. i made at 110 deg. spot hit with some foam safe, then laid the balsa tri-stock with a lil gorilla...next will be mountin it to the bird fuse...

gettin the tail installed to the fuse....the bird is to big for my surface plate, lols. so i have to use the big work table to glue up...at this point, i tack the back end with some foam safe then reach under with a lil gorilla on a bamboo skewer and tack the front, and let sit a few hours... after i hit it with foam safe, then run a small bead of gorilla along each side to make small fillets. hopefully my 3mm depron gets here quick..the fall is coming hard now, and i would like to maiden before it gets to cold. then i will take my time to paint this winter..peace, randy.

    Randy,
This build just gets better and better.... I love it! The tail is looking great! I can't wait to see how good this bird looks when you get the paint on it. I'm also really looking forward to seeing your flight report on it. It's got to be a really relaxing flight envelope with these, just cruising around. I'm even more convinced that I want to build one now. Ideal for a bit of relaxed Sunday lazy flying.

Just have to track down some good plans for them... I know there were a couple of versions floating round on RC Groups... but if you know of any freeby plans that I could pull into sketchup to create the cut files from, please yell up! :D Otherwise I'll just have to design my own... I doubt that anybody can claim copyright on the shape of an eagle  maybe on the construction and actual parts, but on the original prototype.... I wonder how long god's copyright is valid for??

    Best Regards,
    Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

wile im waitin on the 3mm top skin depron, i decided it would be easier to make the wing mounts. the fiber is 1/8 dia. also the rods will insert into a piece of ply that has the holes in. i still have to drill and tap the back plate for nylon screw in rear of wing. after i skin top, and mount the two servos it will be ready for maiden. i think the auw is going to come in at 28oz. the way everything is going. but i will have to wait for a lil more glue and paint. i will maiden it without the airbrushed feathers thou. peace, randy.

could not wait to do top skin, and no room in the workshop, but i had to see the size comparison...took out to the yard, and set the models side by side....here is the 48in. span sittin next to the new eagle...without top skin, and minus the lipo the model weighs 27 oz. exactly. randy.

Beautiful work... Just stunning Randy. Thanks for pointing me to the cut files I grabed the original that you worked from too... I'm going to re-scale it a little bit. Not as big as your new bird though, I wouldn't have room to store it.

    Best Regards,
    Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

Crash and I are both betting the big bird is going to look better than its smaller cousin. It already looks VERY impressive!

Dennis, its hard to see in the photo but when you look at them from the top, the difference is huge...I'm thinking it will look better also as all the feathers will be larger to paint also, lols. hope it flied ok since i added the clark-y along with the size scale. randy.

Can't wait to see this one painted!
This one is big enough that you could probably glue real feathers to it for scale effect! :D

got the electrics installed....i found some old push-rod tube i had from the "very old nitro days" ....man i cant even imagine messin with that stuff again...it would be time to give up the hobby, lols. anyhow got the body done with a 15.5 oz. weight ready for flight with my new 1300mah pack....soon as the 3mm depron gets here i can finish the top wing skin, and maiden. i just hope it had enough power to get this heavy bird in the air...the body came out fatter than i figured. randy,
