...man i cant even imagine messin with that stuff again..

Amen to that... no nitro no 50cc gassers none of it

Nothing but foam and electric for me

In a perfect world there would be a denser light EPP that I could assemble exclusively with the hot glue gun, my first EPP eagle has had a couple of "hot glue surgeries" and it is still tickin like a Timex

There is one...... The downside is that it's hideously expensive.... It's called HD60 and it's made by Zote Foams. I tried some out. It's got the density of Depron, and the toughness of EPP. It also has a surface finish that is very much similar to the beautifully smooth finish of Depron.

The downside, as I said is the cost... even the bulk price is about 5 times the price of Depron.

    Best Regards,
    Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

This model is looking cooler by the day! The radio gear looks lost in that huge fus :D . If it flys as slowly and smoothly as I expect it to then it'll make an awsome AP model. You'll have to put a camera in there and get some footage flying with the real birds.

I think you'll like this video that was shown on UK tv :

A quick Google search for "HD 60 foam" found this: http://www.qualityfoam.com/plastazote.asp
    Call them and ask.

Interesting stuff that Hd60, sure would like a sample. Seems the 60 is kg/m*3 maybe the 30 would be better. A dirty calc says thats 10oz per 6mmx1mx1m sheet

Here's is a quote from someone that seems to know about it. Sorry about the assist in the thread Hijack :D super cool bird, btw :D

Zotefoams is a British company that produces 34 (at last count) different foams. The LD and HD prefixes are Zotefoams' cross-linked, closed cell polyethylene foam. LD stands for low-density, HD stands for high-density. The number following represents the density of the foam in kg/ cubic metre. Therefore, LD45 is Plastizote's low-density cross-linked polyethylene foam with a density of 45 kg/cubic metre. That seems simple enough, but where it gets confusing is when you start to consider foams like LD60 and HD60. They have identical densities, but different physical characteristics as a result of different cell structures. Zotefoams classify LD60 as a "standard" foam, while HD60 is a rigid foam. Simply put, HD60 (and HD30, HD80, and HD115) are more rigid and firmer foams than LD60. To put this into perspective, LD60 has a hardness rating of 65 Shore, whereas HD60 has a hardness rating of 84 Shore. I can't tell you off hand just what a "Shore" is equal to.

These eagle videos are great!.. There was a guy on RC groups that posted some pics a while back where an eagle would match his flying. If he flew inverted then the eagle would copy him. It was really great to see.I have no idea where is may be on that forum but if you find it please link it, the pictures were great.

The quality is not great but I could not believe it when I saw it. Its a golden eagle taking down a deer!

Looking great Randy! are you still using the same depron from your order? how many sheets does it take to build one of these?

no mark, i ordered a full case of the 9mm and the 6mm also i had to order a 10 pack of the 3mm half sheet for top skin. i just joined two to cover....man i really don't recall how many sheets i have used...the wing takes two sheets of 9mm, and one 6mm for ribs and two full sheets, or four half 3mm sheets as i did. the thing id huge and just to do the fuse takes a full sheet not counting the tail. i got files all over the place, lols. I'm very poor with file management...

got the eagle ready for its maiden flight today....the maiden was not a success. the model was tossed up and from the first second, until the landing the model was uncontrollable. i never flew nothing like it. it pitched up and down like it was tail heavy, but i didn't think it was. i kinda think the servos were to small or something. any how after a brief uncontrollable flight i made a controlled crash. my friend wanted me to fix, but instead i took me stuff outta it and gave to him to mess with. i will try to decide to remake, or just forget about it and move along....the upside to me was i flew without spending time to paint. for now i shall stick to the little eagle. randy.

I think I will press ahead with my big Eagle just got the enlarged plans today in the mail

each wing half will be 43"

Randy, that sticks for sure! :( Its sounds like you may have been porpoising? (pitch up,stall, recover, and repeat) I think you would be right by adding more weight to the front.
I really wanted to see this one in the air.. man. Well that is a lot what this hobby has been for me,learning what will and will not work and the reasons why. I hope you can get a chance to try it again with more weight to the front and see how that works so we can all learn from this. Either way it was an AWESOME build and a lot of fun to follow. Thanks for sharing it with us Randy :)

yea mark thanks....one of my biggest mistakes was trying to hurry to the field to meet my flying friends, i ran out the house without a wing bolt and prop....the whole maiden thing was a rush thing...and all along i was tellin myself its not rite....i just thru the pack in and threw up....kills me is i knew things weren't rite, and did anyhow, lols. that's the idiot monkey in me i suppose. randy.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Clark Y's are tough to get a handle on when short coupled. They are so narrow in speed range. (i.e. faster they go the more the TE lifts) which is why lots of old timers had an inverted airfoil on the elevator

Please, don't give up on the big bird notion yet, you build to good to pass up that upper level coolness factor. A different airfoil is all that is needed. I've always considered airfoils on an particular model to come in four flavors. Un-flyable, so so, good, and magical. You've already got one of those out of the way

66tbird, thanks bud....if i decide to do another one, i will build the wing foil exactly like the little one....that one is proven to fly nice. only trobs is at high altitude the old monk cant see it, lols. randy.
