I have no idea which section to put this in so I stuck it in General.....

    Hiya Guys!!
I'm currently taking a break from code mashing for a few weeks... I've got to the point of not being able to see the wood for the trees in relation to the code, so I'm going to take my head out of it, for a short while, and let things resolve themselves.

MY Sketchup Model Of My Current Project!!!

Replica, of a Sequential Circuits, Prophet 5 synthesizer...... Why build this?? Well I always wanted one, and could never afford one back in the 1980's They retailed in the UK for something like £3,000.00 back then and now they're considered a collectable classic synth, so a good condition one costs anything between £4,000.00 and £7,000.00 even today. Synths from that period were not the ultra reliable machines we have today either. They were tempramental beasts, with limited or even no memory systems.

The prophet 5 was a huge leap forward when it came out. For one thing it could play 5 notes at once (most synths up until then, could only play 1 note at a time) and store sound patches!! It's also one of the best sounding "Fattest" sounding analogue synths ever designed. To give you an example.. I attched an MP3 Of what this synth sounds like It's not the best example but you already heard what it can really do, on nearly every single record released in the early 1980's! Duran Duran, OMD, Japan, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Jean Michele Jarre, Vangellis, Gary Numan, New Order, Talking Heads, The Cars, ELO, Ultravox, Jan Hammer, Simple Minds, Belinda Carlisle, Culture Club, Imagination, Blondie, Spandau ballet, David Bowie, Wham, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Thomas Dolby, A-Ha ..... etc etc etc... this list is huge, so I'll stop there....

90% or more of the sounds on this track from Yello Magic Orchestra are Prophet 5:

OK so where does the Phlatprinter come in....... Well, most of the case of this instrument is made of 1/2" thick timber, apart from a metal base pan. So it's all being cut out on the Phlatprinter using Multipass.

Fozzy what a cool project! Man, just the picture brought back so many memories!
    Back in the day
    I had my Roland Juno-60
    [IMG]

    Ensoniq Mirage EPS
    [IMG]

    Casio CZ-101
    [IMG]

Various other homemade effects circuits pedals drum machines lol
I had blast with them all and would lay down tracks using cakewalk

My dream back then was to score a minimoog and prophet 5!
I could never afford to buy any of these so they were handed down from others that were getting out of 'the scene' at the time. When I got out of it I did the same and sometimes I wonder just how far they have gone? :D

Good luck with the project I will keeping an eye on this one!

p.s. if you need to get that old synth fix or try out some cool instruments that you never could afford. You could always check out these links. This was a cool way to get great sounds without have the actual instruments. I used Rebirth all the time but reason has taken its place. Reason is awesome to say the least!

I always thought it would be fun to make virtual synths like these using a touch screen and encase them in there wooden boxes from back in the day!
    Have fun!

AWHHHH! SWEET!!! I had no idea you were into this!! :D Now this really is cool, because you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

Here's my current gear list... not a complete list by any stretch of the imagination, but it might interest you:
    Moog Rogue
Maplin 5600S (monster of an Analog modular synth, that I got in a swap for some software! :D )
    CZ101
    CZ1000
    Roland D5
FZ1 Sampler (actually the rebadged Hohner HS1 Version)
Yamaha FB01 (4 operator FM synth module)
Roland MT32 and CM 32 (Sound Canvas modules)
Elka Orla DMK7 (fried!! that's being gutted for parts for the Prophet5 because it has the same keyboard keys in it)
    Yamaha TX7 module
Yamaha RX21 and RX11 Drum machines...
Atari ST running Steinberg Pro 24 and C-Lab Creator
fair few bits of outboard as well..... I'm sure I missed a couple of things here.... Oh yes! one of them is my Piano 1901 Overstrung Metal Frame by T.M. Vincent (London).
AND NO ROOM IN THE HOUSE FOR ANY OF IT!!

I'm massively updating the electronics in the prophet 5... Getting hold of the original Curtis and SSM chips is impossible in any sort of quantity at anything like a sensible price. They've been obsolete for way too long. So it's being updated a running a virtual emulation of a Prophet 5 internally. The hardware interfacing is the hard part. I'm using boards from http://www.ucapps.de/index.html?page=mbhp.html The objective is to make it look and sound identical to an original on the outside, and have much more reliable internal electronics that have far greater capability than the original. Now all I have to do is find a way to pay for it!!

    Keyboard Controller Section
1 X Core Module running self written software...
2 X DIN Modules to handle input from the switches on 61 keyboard keys and + 2 buttons to set + or - for which MIDI Channel it's transmitting on.
1 X AIN Module to handle Pitch and Mod wheels, plus a couple of inputs for external volume and mod pedals.
MIDI IN routed from synth rear panel with merge on.
MIDI OUT routed to Panel Controller Section.

    Panel Controller Section

    1 X Core Module running Midibox 64E
2 X DIN Modules to handle 26 Rotary Controllers
2 X DIN Modules to handle 37 panel push buttons + 8 64E Menu Buttons.
1 X DOUT Module to handle 32 LED Lights on buttons.
1 X 2X16 LED Module (backlit Red letters on Black background) for 64E Display.
MIDI IN from keyboard controller section
    MIDI OUT to Synth Section.

    Synth Section

Mini ITX Motherboard running a Flash Card instead of a hard drive, with XP and "NI Pro53" + "Arturia ProphetV" Which should give lots of sound options.
Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard, ports routed to synth rear panel.
24Bit Sound Card, With Midi IO... and audio inputs/outputs routed to standard 1/4" rear panel instrument jacks.
MIDI IN from Panel Controller Section.
MIDI OUT routed to Rear Panel of synth.

    Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

 I keep having chats with John about what a wicked studio we could build if we lived on the same continent. :D See! all I need is somebody to offer me a REALLY good job at sensible money in the USA and I'd be there like a rocket.

Are you sure administration is the right word? Ours are just as bad, and the job situation here is just as dire, perhaps worse even.

I can see you creating a major corporation one day Mark... :) I know you can do that.

    PROJECT UPDATE!!
WOOHOOOOOO!!!!! After a month of family disasters and financial woes, I finally have something to post on this project!

Wood parts cut using the Multipass Manglerizer on the Phlatprinter. All the wood case parts are 1/2" thick Mahogany. The steel base pan was ready at the Steel stockholders this morning. So I propped a couple of the wood parts and the keyboard up to see how it was looking..... Looking remarkably like the sketchup design. YEAH BABY!! TOTALLY SHAGADELIC RAD and COOLIO!! :D :D :D
    [IMG]
The finish on the wood was achieved with a mixture of linseed oil and wood stain, followed by pure solid block Bees Wax and a lot of rubbing! no varnish here :D it's glossier in real life than it looks in the photograph.

Sorry I didn't get any video of the parts being cut out, but the Phlatprinter waltzed though it like it wasn't even there. Very pleased with the clean sharp straight cuts. There's no way I could have got them this accurate by hand. At least not without a vast amount more hours of work involved.

    Best Regards,
    Julian (Fozzy The Bear)
