What do you think of the second edition of the Phlatprinter The MKII?

Hey, I saw the video from where Mark retro-fitted the belt drive system on one of the PP kits. It was totally amazing! The sound was kind of scary, too. That baby was munching foam like a beast!

I was wanting to build another machine to incorporate all of the mods that you guys have come up with since mine was built. Now it looks like I'll get the chance, but with the belt-drive speeds!

Hurry up, Carews! I'm wearing out my F5 button!

I could be wrong, but I was thinking that Mark and Pete may have been working on a special version of the PhlatScript to allow for ramps in the tabbed areas so the machine didn't actually have to come to a stop to do a tab - it would just ramp down and up again for the tabs....

    WOW!!!! That video was awesome!!!
It shows 300ipm at the end not 200ipm even more impressive.
    Great job Mark!

    Thank you guys,

That video was an early test of the first prototype belt drive system with the pex pipe so the cuts were a little shaky but man does it get the job done. You want a plane no more waiting 15 - 30 min its done in 3 - 5 min if that some times :D it truly acts like a printer now

Mike sorry about the same video bro there will be new ones soon.( I sent Mike the same video so he is still waiting for a new one :) )

Mike is right about the Vtabs they make a huge difference in speed and the video will show that instead of having to stop and retract and then move over and re plunge, it is all once smooth movement, it happens so fast that it looks like the bit is pooping out tabs as it cuts

We are really excited about this MKII and can't wait to get this going. I am trying to film on my own today just to throw you an real quick overview of the new features, so I better get back to it.
Thanks again everyone, talk to you soon.

Thank you guys it makes it all worthwhile when we get comments like this.
I have more videos I will be add in a little while about the mods to your existing PP to upgrade the Y axis to a belt drive system.
Also adding a video show casing a lot of cutting going on with the MKII :D

Mark, in the video you didn't mention anything about the steppers. What steppers are you using this time, torque wise? Also, I see above mentions of 200ipm and more, in the video I didn't here you say it. Is that the speed that you are getting on the prototype?

If I may be so bold as to step in and field this one...

The machine in the video showing 300 ipm was using the same Easy-CNC steppers that the rest of us got!

The problem with most, if not all, of the steppers out there is that when you kick up the speed, torque levels are sacrificed. The faster you push the motors, the more torque you lose. The glory of running a belt drive system is that you have the ability to design the gear ratio in the system to get the speeds you want to see while keeping the motor(s) running lower rpm, thus staying in the "torque band". Of course, there is a balancing act, but now Mark's done all that for us! :D

TigerPilot, Good point soory about that.
I am using the 90oz stock steppers from easy cnc. The speeds posted are right it is capable of speeds of 200ipm and more. :)
I use 200 for my everyday cuts. The stepper has less of a turn to make to move the gantry, so you are getting pleanty of torque from these stock steppers without ever having to worry about losing a step again.
Yes these are the speeds we are grtting with the prototype machine, and we expect even better results from this version we will know in a few days :D
    Thanks

Saw the video and am impressed with the new and improved design. Eats like a MaKo shark , fast and hungry!! The addition of the top being able to stand up on its own with a built in stop, compartment for the board & fan, precision ground rods, etc ..This thing is going to soooooo-smooth.. And the new outside design is a good choice.. Great job Mark! :D

    Mark,

I can't believe all the stuff you get done. What about the X axis? Did you have to change the gearing?

    Thanks you guys :)
Kwok I left the X alone because it works so good with the gearing that we figured when we did. I really didn't need to mess with that too much at all with the exception of lowering the drive roller.

Mark, are you micro-stepping those motors @ 1600 per rev, or did you bring that up to 1/4 or 1/2 step (theoretically to raise the step-voltage and torque) also?

Three questions: Where is this video showing it cutting at 200 ipm?
How do you get Mach to accept something over 47ipm?
When can I order a MKII?

Great feedback everyone! Thank you, keep it coming. This is the hard part now, actually finishing what we started  .

Dave, here is the video showing the MK II cutting at 300" per minute!!

We post our videos on Youtube. If you subscribe to them, you will be notified every time we post a new one. :p

lol Randy, I think I proved in the build videos that I am not really into the tools end too much. On the other hand, my calculater is still smoking helping with all of the measurements and needed pulley systems calculations.
