Foam in California

Hey guys I see some of you are looking for the thicker foam in California.
I found a couple places that may be of help.
These were threads copied from an art site of people looking for the same thing.

I finally found a supplier of Dow blue rigid extruded polystyrene foam in California.

It took a while but, after I tasked our purchasing agent with finding it, it came quickly.

I called today and here is the scoop:

It is not sold in Cali for insulation as it does not meet the CA Fire Code. This company sells it for the Special Effects Industry. They have it in stock however it isn't as cheap as it would be elsewhere as sold for insulation purposes. The 3/4" sheets are $7.85 ea (that's for a 2' x 8' sheet) and $28.85 for a 2" x 8" sheet of 2" thick foam. I was quoted $35.00 shipping for 4 sheets of 2" thick plus $18.00 packaging fee and $45.00 extra to ship to a residential address. I can have it shipped to my work to save the $45.00 fee, that still works out to $42.10 per sheet which comes out to $2.64 per sq/ft. Also, they will cut it smaller if I desire. I was thinking about 2' x 2' pieces.

Question is, do I purchase this now from them or do I try to find it cheaper elsewhere? I'm tempted to see if the local Hobby Shops would be interested in a bulk buy. I really want some of this for some projects but, it's looking more and more expensive.
2) GMI games and Collectables (www.gmigames.com) has the pink foam in stock. They sell 4x8 sheets of various thicknesses and will sell smaller sizes also (they cut the 4x8 sheet down to the size you want).

Talk to Rob at the store. They are located in Riverside, CA about a couple miles west of the I15 on Limonite road.
GMI Games price for foam is as follows:

$1 per inch of depth per square foot

i.e. 2'' deep at 2'x2' =$4

that's for 1 or 2 inch depths. At 3 or 4 inch depths(not always available btw) it goes to $1.5 per inch per square foot.

i.e. 3" deep at 2'x2' $7

this is significantly cheaper than the Adventurers Guild and Lowes and Home Depot both told me they couldn't order it.

3) Starting in early 2008, Higher Ground Games will be carrying a line of hobby foam in blue and pink options in addition to pre-cast Hirst Arts blocks. We will stock sheets of foam in multiple thicknesses and sizes, as well as other sculpted items such as pre-flocked hills and trenches.

I found a store in Burbank. I was looking for and they sell the 1/2" 25psi 4' x 8' sheets for about $17.00. They sell all other thicknesses as well and keep them in stock. You can walk into the store, buy it, have them cut it for you, walk out.

Just a heads up... If you are in North San Diego county, the San Marcos Home Depot has 1/2 pink foam. I checked online as a whim and the San Marcos and Vista stores said they had it in stock. I couldn't believe it so I stopped there this morning and there it was. I almost fell over right there in the store, but I rallied like a champ (or chump) and ran to the front of the store with a couple pieces.

Bought a 2" and 4" sheet of the blue stuff. Both come in sheets 2 foot by 8 foot. They even cut it into four foot lengths to fit in my car. The stuff is not cheap but for the thickness and sqaure footage it was a fair price. Came to $150. Ouch but considering that neither the blue or pink are available in Los Angeles (at least at my Home Depot and Lowes) I was happy to get it

That's great news, Mark. I'll check which one is the closest to me and will get me some.

Edit: Found lots of it in the Hemet Home Depot store, for those who live in my neck of the woods (and you know who you are). They have 1/2" at 48x96 and 1" at 24x96. It's pink but better pink than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Thanks you to Mark for finding this. It got me on the right track to finding it.

Up in Citrus Heights, just north of Sacramento, the local Lowes has a palette of *pristine* Dow 1/4 Pro Board in great shape. I think 37$ a bundle. Verified just this past weekend!

FanFold / BlueCor bundle 43.00 each.
Lowes in Huntington Beach. CA.
Just call any LOWES as they can locate for you the closest store that has stock.
This store has about 40 bundles and there really nice.

I went to the Lowes near me and asked them to get me a bundle. The don't do it. Told me to contact the store that has it and ask them to ship it to me through UPS. They have spacial rates with UPS and it comes out to be much more cost-effective to have it shipped this way. They will only bring it in if the store that has it is not too far away.
