Well, I received the replacement parts yesterday and installed them today. I'm cutting my second test plane right now and everything looks good so far (well except for my paint job LOL). I did add the sand mod to the pressure roller while I was waiting. :D

I jumped the gun a little bit. It is missing lines from the cut outs. I'm going to play with it and see what happens.

Bill, I had a similar problem to yours. In my case the drive roller had a barely perceivable wobble to it and I mentioned it to M&T during my build over the Christmas holidays. I still don't know for sure what the exact problem was-perhaps a slight imperfection in the tube or a hair off the center on one of the caps.

I still went through the build and it cut foam perfectly. Very rarely it would botch a cut and I'm not even sure it is due to the roller. Even did a good job on some Lite-Ply. But I wanted to get bolder :D and start playing with MDF and harder woods. Then it became very problematic, no matter what tape or foam laminating I did with the boards. EPP also slipped here and there. I could jog and the material would frequently slip on the Y axis in about the same spot on the roller. Disassembled, tightened belts and sanded the deck several times. After some investigation, I determined that my drive roller was definitely the culprit.

Last night I installed a replacement roller that M&T sent. Additionally, instead of the coarse skid tape, I went premium down to a local skate shop and bought their higher end grip tape. This alone should be a worthy upgrade. I covered the rollers latitudinally instead of longitudinally like my original build-this was to reduce the likelihood that a seam could catch on the material or lift it. This took only 3 strips to cover the circumference of the cylinder.

For testing, I wrote a simple gcode file to jog it back and forth 15 inches 10 times. To my delight, the MDF did not slip (with painters tape for insurance) and returned back to its original position. I ran this code several times increasing the feed rate to 200ipm and it still stayed accurate. I could not do this before as it would inevitably end up 2-3 inches off.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I'm sure with Mark's help you'll get a consistently stable printer.

And thank you Mark and Trish for helping me solve my problems!!!

    Cheers!

ToxicToast, can you post a picture of your new drive roller with its new anti-skid tape?

Yoram, not really much to see to be honest. Except the grip runs perpendicular to the length of the cylinder. I also noticed that TVC spiral wrapped his drive roller like a candy cane, which may be the best of both worlds.

So far, I highly recommend the skate grip tape. I used "Jessup" grip, cost 16$ for 90". I have enough to wrap another roller left over.

ToxicToast, my main problem was definetly the drive roller - Mark Trish sent me another one. I did the spiral wrap on it and it worked fine. On the old drive roller there is a 2" section where the lip of the end cap extends substantially above the non-skid compared to other areas of the drum. I installed spiral wrapped the drive roller, filled the pressure roller with sand and the X Drive no longer seems to be a problem. I do prefer the spireal wrap and when I do it again I will do it with one continuous strip. This Phlatprinter poject has been an adventure - no fault of the Phlatprinter. I decided to cut and build a Divinity II because I loved my Zagi and thought it would be fun. In one of my stores I have several cans of 3m spray foam glue, that no one seems to want. So I decided I would try it on the FF. I've made a mess of my garage with machines, stands, piles of foam etc and my wife wasn't home so I decided to build in on the kitchen table. I shook the can, pulled the cap off and saw the nozzle had come off. I started to insert it into the can and the can erupted. I pulled the nozzle back out and the stream just got bigger. I tried to cut the flow with my finger tip - it didn't work. Picture a can of crazy string exploding.LOL. In my panic I held the can in the sink, while I decided what to do. Picturing the new insinkerator I just installed being ruined, I pulled the can out of the sink and threw it into a garbage bag. The bag started to inflate and ended up on front lawn. I'm still cleaning glue up around the kitchen

That was awesome, Bill! I'm glad you can laugh about it now. Just the tiniest bit of 3M 77 is a pain in the butt to clean up. I can't imagine the epic amounts you had to deal with.

So, how was the couch that night? You can bet she'll be reminding you of this for years and years....

Well so far she has found hardened glue on the floor tiles and on a seat cushion on one of the chairs. She's taken it in good stride so far. I have loads of space at my main store, but I can't really work on anything there when I'm working and I don't want to hang around when I'm done. I do most of this stuff between 11pm and 2am - you can tell by most of my posts LOL. It's my day off today and I'm trying to clean my garage so that I have more room to work.
