Hello. First I want to thank all you who have posted help material relating to the PhatPrinter, SketchUp, and PhlatScript. They have been very helpful. I would like to know if there is any interest in flying saucer type planes. My goal is to further the development of saucers. I would like to submit my KX-5.24 as an entry into this type of plane. This is a symmetrical ribbed 24" diameter saucer. It has an impressive "Cool Factor" when in the air. This is a completed plane that does fly. This is the first forum that this plane has been submitted to. Please take a look and let me kwow what your thoughts are.

That is a really cool plane! Looks really high tech with the semi transparent grey covering.
What type of controls do you have (elevons, RET..)?
Is that a carbon spar you have for strengthening?
Do you have some more stats on the plane(weight, power setup etc)?

Oh, that turned out to be alot of questions. Well, welcome to the forum!

    /Jan

Thanks for the comments. Here are the specs:

    24" diameter disc
    AUW = about 16oz
A $16 dollar motor/ESC combo (B2208/14 and 18 amp ESC) from RCHotDeals.com is a perfect match for this plane. About 100 watts is what you’re looking for. I prefer at least a 1:1 thrust to weight ratio.
    APC 8x4.3 (or smaller) prop
    1320 to 2200 mah 3 cell lipo
2 servos (about 15 oz torque) in elevon configuration (like TowerPro 9 gram servos)
four 3 mm carbon fiber tube/rods for support spars.

    Cool looking plane!
    Thanks for sharing with us.
I'm curious as to what you covered it with. It looks really nice.
Oh and welcome to the forum!

Shaun, thanks for the comment. I have tried several film coverings. The best to work with is called 21st Centery MicroLite Film. TowerHobbies.com is a source.

Not exactly my style per-say, but definitely cool looking! Kinda reminds me of the flying pancake that Vought made...

I have read about the Vought V-173 / XF5U-1 as part of saucer research.

Cool-Factor is right, KX-5, I like it. What is the canopy made of. Foam and then you covered it?

Yes, the canopy is foam. Then covered with silver film.

KX-5, That's a very nice and complete construction pdf you attached there, also. Cool looking plane - Thanks for posting it here. :D

    KX-5,
That came out beautiful looking! I really need to learn how to cover like that. Thank you for sharing this with everyone. Really nice job on the post and the instructions PDF as well.
We are honored to have this here thank you. :)

p.s. We may need to move this one into the Strange aircraft section if that's ok with you?

Very nice! I am always looking for unusual things to build and bring to the field. About every two weeks I bring something out to the field that is made to get attention and the group has sort of come to expect it.

Usually when I show up, a bunch of guys will gather at my car to see what I might be dragging out. This will definitely go to my build list.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Flash and Dorsal! I've enjoyed following along the other posts you and others contribute to. Flash, when you get this one completed and flying, please provide some feed back. There's always room to improve a design.

 Y'know - This design just begs to be doubled in size, with a set of programmable LEDs build inside and around the wing, then flown (quietly) at night.

    ---------------------------------------

Yeah, yeah - Then I'll release to the newspapers the story that my brother was abducted by aliens, but they changed the historical time-line so much that it looks like I never had a brother. Or that I used to be the President of North America, because Mexico, the US and Canada all merged into a Federation in 1946, but when the aliens changed history they made sure that never happened either.

    ---------------------------------------

Or maybe I'll just make one of these.
Time for my medicine now, I think.
    Oooo look, something shiny!

KX-5.....this free plane has more detailed instructions than some of the store bought ones.....what a great design and instructions set.

    You must be an engineer....

Thanks Thewz... It's the software design occupation that drives me to detail. I'm hoping that by providing good information, others will build a saucer and provide some feedback.

Mark, I appreciate your enthusiasm and look forward to your results. I have more to add to the PDF to help out the process and will post an update soon. I do think the saucer looks better in person than the picture portrays. Please keep me informed on progress.

PS. Because of your PhlatPrinter, the saucer goes together SOOO much better than it did when cutting by hand.
