I'm sure I'm missing something. I've been trying to use the pocket plugin for sharpie art. How do you change the offsets? No matter what size bit I enter in the parameters, I still get .0625 offsets

Jeff you need to open the plug in in notebook and change it there, it will probably be fractional but this should be an easy conversion!

actually you put in the bit size and it automatically makes it half width for your offset! Sorry for the confusion!
I wish I knew how to change this to inches. I think Kwok moded it in mm and when I change the mm to inch it becomes corrupt.. HMMM :)

    Thanks John

After I changed bit size to 2mm to give approx .040 offset, and try to save, a little window pops up access denied

I remember having issues when changing this #, and you need to make sure you have the same decimal and convert it to mm or inches. As you see mine above the number was originally 0.1181.mm and I changed it to 0.795.mm . The first time I left out the zero ie.. .795.mm and it would not work for me. It is sensitive to the decimal and you have to keep it mm or inches depending on what version you have. Hope this makes sense!

For some reason, notebook wouldn't let me replace old pocket tool with new pocket tool.
I needed administrative permission (AM I NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR?)
I had to save somewhere else, delete old pocket tool, then drop new pocket tool into plugins. Works like a charm, now my offsets are .0394.

Maybe some day I'll learn how to navigate a cpu

Is it possible to change the zig-zags from the default X-axis to along the Y-Axis?

Gets rid of problems caused by Skew and manually rotating everything is a pain.

this is on my list of things to do, but meanwhile here is a little something to make pocketing complex shapes easier.

In this version you can press 'shift' to only draw the zigzag, or press CTRL to only draw the boundary.
So, to pocket a complex polygon:
    select the tool
hold down CTRL and click to create the boundary cut
now draw a few lines across the boundary poly to create the minimum number of convex faces.
They don't have to be pure convex, but avoid acute angles and small areas.
Now select the pocket tool again and hold down shift. The preview will show you the proposed zigzag
and you can use it for the sub poly if it looks ok. Do this for all sub poly's
Now delete those lines you added to create sub poly's
Now use the SketchuCam Centerline tool and tag the zigzags and then the boundary.

Note that the current bit diameter and stepover settings will be displayed in the Ruby console if it is open.

NOTE: forgot to say in the first place.... the zigzags are often 'broken' and will cut in random order.
Use the fredo6 Bezier Splines plugin to *convert to polyline* before setting as centerline cut. Do the boundary while you are there.... Attached files PocketTool.rb (9.8 KB)Â

Thanks. If it's ok with the original author I'd like to convert the pocket tool into a phlatpockettool so it can tag the lines as phlatcuts by itself, and also use the current bit diameter. And the offset needs to be put into the options dialog. and..... :p

That would be fantastic! As for the original author (toba) you could try to shoot him a PM and see what he thinks, he was on today :) I don't think he will mind but always best to ask.
For a little back ground reading here is the original post on the pocket tool viewtopic.php?f=101&t=302&p=6975#p6975
    Here is his website: http://www.eprcp.com/
Incorporating the pocket tool all fixed up right into SketchUcam is going to be great swarfer, thank you so much for working on this for everyone to enjoy.

changed couple of lines to improve the status text display. I noticed that it disappeared if one moused over any other tool button that changed the status bar.

aaaargh. .rb and .rbz files are not allowed upload types!
ok, here is pockettool.zip, save it

if you have Sketchup8 (and the new 'make 2013' should work like this too)
    1. change the 'zip' to 'rbz'
    2. open sketchup
    3. click Window
      1. preferences
      2. extensions
      3. 'install extension' button
      4. point to the PocketTool.rbz file and click 'open'
    4. done, it is now on the 'Plugins' menu
    if you have Sketchup 7
    1. close Sketchup
    2. unzip PocketTool.zip to the Sketchup plugins folder
    3. open Sketchup and you should find 'pocket' on the plugins menu

swarfer, it would be nice if we could set the bit diameter on the fly rather than go into the .rb every time to change it but I guess that would be done once it's incorporated into the SketchUCam.

I just tried the pocket tool. It works fine with the 'shift' and 'ctrl' keys. There is still a problem with the zig-zag lines in complex faces but it's something that can be worked around. Thanks for the upgrade, my man.

once i figure out how to make it into a phlattool, it will use the current bit diameter for sure.

my aim for making the drawing splittable with the CTRL/SHIFT keys was so you can more easily fix the zigzags for complex shapes. first use CRTL to do the outline, now you can do zigzags inside that in sections using SHIFT click, and maybe adding some lines across to make shapes is CAN zigzag.

I have in fact just committed[1] some changes today, mainly streamlining metric stuff, and added G61 to the 3D code as well, according to the option set in Constants/MyConstants.rb.

[1] to my personal subversion server so I can keep stuff organized between 2 computers and Sketchup7 and 8 on both of them.

I'm a bit confused by the new RBZ installer method. According to the web that will only install to the plugins folder. What now with all the phlat stuff being in the tools folder? Does it HAVE to be in 'tools'?
    anyone know?

I just tried your idea of using the outline first and then make the shapes less complex and then applying the zig-zag lines. It works very well, swarfer. It fixed the problem with the pocket lines not in the part.

That is cool, swarfer. I didn't think of using it like this. I'll try it next time I get these errors, which I do quite often and than have to hunt the problem. Once the tool will be included in the SketchUCam and will accept the default bit diameter it will be the way to go.
